Phoenix Karate School in Great Yarmouth receives GYSLT grant

Congratulations to Great Yarmouth’s Phoenix Karate School, which has received a grant from the Great Yarmouth Sport & Leisure Trust to support its competitive squad as it prepares for the European Championships.

The grant will help Phoenix provide its young competitors with new tracksuits, giving the squad the opportunity to travel and compete as a team while proudly representing Great Yarmouth on the international stage.

It comes at an exciting time for the local karate school. Phoenix Karate School’s competitive squad has recently returned from the World Championships with an outstanding 17 medals, including four golds – a fantastic achievement for the young athletes, their coaches and everyone who supports them.

Now, the squad is turning its attention to its next major challenge. In October 2026, Phoenix competitors will travel to Sheffield for the European Championships, where they will compete against athletes from across Europe.

Supporting Great Yarmouth’s young athletes

Phoenix Karate School provides opportunities for young people in Great Yarmouth to get active, develop their karate skills and challenge themselves through competition.

For those who progress into the competitive squad, national and international tournaments offer the chance to put their training to the test, set ambitious goals and experience what can be achieved through dedication and hard work.

The recent World Championships demonstrated just how successful that journey can be, with the Phoenix squad bringing 17 medals back to Great Yarmouth, including four golds.

The GYSLT grant is helping the squad take the next step in that journey, supporting them as they prepare to represent their club and their hometown at the European Championships.

Flying the flag for Great Yarmouth

Being part of a competitive team can be an important experience for young athletes. New tracksuits might be a small part of preparing for a major championship, but they help create a sense of identity and belonging as the squad travels together to compete.

For Phoenix Karate School, it's also a chance to proudly carry the name of Great Yarmouth with them.

From training locally to competing on the international stage, the Phoenix squad is showing what young people from Great Yarmouth can achieve when they have the opportunity, support and determination to pursue their sporting ambitions.

Congratulations to everyone at Phoenix Karate School on receiving your GYSLT grant. We wish the whole squad the very best of luck at the European Championships in Sheffield this October!
