Bread Kitchen receives GYSLT grant to restore community gardening space

Congratulations to Cobholm’s Bread Kitchen C.I.C., which has received a Great Yarmouth Sport & Leisure Trust grant to help rebuild the polytunnel used by its weekly community gardening groups.

Recent strong winds destroyed the roof of Bread Kitchen’s polytunnel and badly damaged the frame, leaving an important growing space unusable.

The GYSLT grant will help Bread Kitchen replace the polytunnel, allowing its gardening groups to get back to growing healthy crops and enjoying the space together.

The weekly sessions welcome adults from across the community, with up to 25 local residents taking part each session. The groups are open all year round and bring together people of different ages – including the organisation’s oldest participant, who is 78.

Growing more than crops

Bread Kitchen’s gardening projects are designed to support healthy lifestyles and wellbeing alongside practical gardening skills.

Participants get active through planting, tending crops and maintaining the site, while working together provides an opportunity to build friendships and reduce social isolation.

The crops grown are also used to encourage participants to learn more about healthy eating and how food choices can support their health and fitness.

The benefits can extend beyond the gardening sessions, too. Bread Kitchen has already seen participants progress into further volunteering and other healthy activities, including taking up gym membership.

The site has also hosted diabetes screening and cancer awareness training, helping connect local residents with wider health and wellbeing opportunities.

Helping the community grow

With the replacement polytunnel, Bread Kitchen will once again have a dedicated space where local residents can grow food, be active, learn new skills and spend time together throughout the year.

For participants who may be vulnerable or experiencing poor mental health, the safe and accessible environment provides an opportunity to build both confidence and connections

A well-deserved result

Congratulations to everyone at Bread Kitchen C.I.C. on receiving your GYSLT grant. We’re delighted to support the restoration of this important community space and look forward to seeing what you grow together.
