Great Yarmouth Cycling & BMX: Bike Routes, Clubs and Places to Ride
Great Yarmouth cycling is about much more than getting from A to B. From family-friendly rides along the seafront to youth cycling clubs, social rides and BMX, there are plenty of ways to get active, build confidence and explore the area on two wheels.
As a local organisation supporting sport and physical activity across Great Yarmouth, we know that finding an activity you genuinely enjoy can make all the difference. You don't need to be a serious cyclist, own the latest kit or be able to ride for miles. Sometimes it's simply about getting outside, having a go and finding something that suits you.
So whether you're looking for Great Yarmouth bike routes, a local cycling club or somewhere to practise your BMX skills, here's some inspiration to get you started.
Cycling in Great Yarmouth: Where to Start
One of the best things about cycling around Great Yarmouth and Gorleston is the variety. You can enjoy a relaxed ride beside the sea, explore local paths or join a group and make cycling a regular part of your week.
For families and newer riders, the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston promenades provide smooth, relatively flat routes where you can enjoy a ride without having to tackle steep hills. The paths around Breydon Water offer another option for getting out and exploring.
If you're planning a longer ride, take a look at the Great Yarmouth Cycle Map to help plan your route, or bikemap.net
Top tip: If you're cycling with children, keep the first few rides manageable. A short route with a destination – perhaps a picnic spot, seafront stop or favourite treat – can be much more appealing than setting out to cover a particular number of miles.

Great Yarmouth Cycling Clubs and Norfolk Cycling Clubs
If you enjoy cycling but don't fancy going it alone, joining a club or group can be a great way to build confidence, improve your skills and meet other riders.
Great Yarmouth Cycling Club (GYCC) has a Youth Section aimed at helping younger riders develop their cycling skills, confidence and fitness in a supportive group environment.
The Youth Section meets around Marine Parade on Gorleston Seafront, making the local coastline part of the cycling experience.
GYCC also offers organised group rides, giving riders the opportunity to experience the social side of cycling and see whether riding with a group is for them.

Other Norfolk cycling clubs and group rides
There are also cycling communities across the wider area, including Velo Club Baracchi in Lowestoft and Dunx Cycles, which offers social group rides with different pace groups.
The important thing is finding a group that matches what you're looking for. You don't have to be the fastest rider in the bunch – social cycling is as much about enjoying the ride and meeting people as it is about distance or speed.
BMX in Great Yarmouth
Cycling doesn't have to mean following a road route.
BMX is a brilliant way to develop balance, coordination, bike control and confidence, while giving riders the chance to learn new skills and challenge themselves.
For riders who want to practise, Southtown Common and Cobholm Recreation Ground are local places to explore BMX and off-road riding.
They're particularly useful for riders who want to work on their control and gradually build their skills. Start with the basics, take your time and build up as your confidence grows.

Bike Maintenance in Great Yarmouth
A bike that's been sitting in the shed for a while might need a little attention before you head out.
If you're looking for bike maintenance in Great Yarmouth, local community projects can offer support alongside opportunities to get involved in cycling.
Shrublands Community Trust has supported community cycling through activities including rides, bike loans and bike maintenance support.
Top Banana, based around the Marina Centre, also provides bike repair services alongside community support and cycling activities.
These kinds of initiatives can make cycling more accessible – whether you're getting back on a bike after a few years, learning how to look after your bike or simply need a little help getting road-ready.
Build Your Cycling Confidence with Bikeability
Feeling confident on a bike is just as important as having somewhere to ride.
Bikeability provides cycle training to help people develop the skills and confidence they need to cycle safely and independently. Training can be particularly valuable for younger riders as they learn how to navigate different environments and become more confident on two wheels.
If confidence has been holding you back, don't feel that you need to figure everything out on your own. Training, clubs and community cycling projects can all help you take that next step.
