From Grant to Games: Expanding Opportunities
The recent GYSLT grant awarded to The Bread Kitchen CIC for a pétanque and wider games area has given the team a wonderful new way to engage the local community. While the grant itself helps to fund this exciting project, it’s just one part of how the Bread Kitchen brings people together, encourages activity, and promotes wellbeing across Great Yarmouth.
A Community Hub with a ‘Good to Grow’ Ethos
Founded in 2016 by Mike and Cathy, The Bread Kitchen has become a vibrant community training provider. Based on a 4.5-acre site in Cobholm, the team runs programmes in gardening, animal care, volunteering, English and Maths, and life skills. Their “Good to Grow” ethos ensures that people of all ages and backgrounds can take part, learn, and thrive in a supportive, inclusive environment.
Home Education: Learning Through Exploration
The Bread Kitchen’s Home Education sessions are a key part of their community work. Children lead these sessions themselves, exploring the outdoors, trying gardening, animal care, and craft activities, while parents stay nearby for support.
These sessions foster independence, creativity and learning, giving young participants experiences that go beyond a traditional classroom setting.
Gardening Groups: Growing Skills and Wellbeing
Adults benefit from gardening groups held three times a week at multiple locations. These sessions help people learn new skills, make friends, and support mental health, all while encouraging a sense of community and collaboration. With qualified gardeners on hand, the groups are welcoming to beginners and experienced participants alike. At time of writing, these groups can be found at:
Mondays: 10-12 at The Shrublands Community Centre (another GYSLT Grant recipient) in Gorleston (meet at the café)
Wednesdays and Fridays: 10-12 at Bread Kitchen’s land in Cobholm (meet at the skatepark)
The Pétanque and Games Area: A Fun, Inclusive Addition
The new pétanque and games area, supported by the grant, complements the Bread Kitchen’s existing programmes. It offers residents a fun, low-impact way to get active, connect with others and enjoy the outdoors.
Together with home education, gardening, and volunteering opportunities, this project highlights how small investments can have a big impact on community engagement and wellbeing.
The Pétanque and Games Area: A Fun, Inclusive Addition
From pétanque to gardening, animal care to educational programmes, The Bread Kitchen is creating a community where everyone has the chance to learn, grow, and belong.
The grant has helped extend these opportunities further, ensuring more residents can benefit from healthy, social and inclusive activities. In every game, class, or session, the Bread Kitchen is making Great Yarmouth a more connected, confident, and active place to live.
