How Great Yarmouth & Waveney Special Olympians Makes a Difference in the Community

Making a Splash: GYWSO’s Impact on the Community

Beyond medals and competitions, Great Yarmouth & Waveney Special Olympians (GYWSO) is making a difference in the wider community.

For over three decades, the club has welcomed swimmers of all abilities, creating a safe, inclusive environment where people with physical, learning, and mental health challenges can thrive.

Grant awarded to Great Yarmouth & Waveney Special Olympians

Building Confidence Through Swimming

GYWSO isn’t just a swimming club - it’s a hub of confidence, friendship, and achievement.

Swimmers gain skills in the water, develop resilience, and experience the pride of representing their town at local, national, and international competitions.

The club’s volunteer coaches guide, encourage, and inspire athletes at every step, making every session a chance to grow and succeed.

Extending Reach with the Grant

Thanks to the grant from the Great Yarmouth Sport & Leisure Trust, GYWSO can replace the essential plinth that means that wheelchair users can participate fully, and sessions remain inclusive for everyone.

The funding also supports the club’s broader mission: to encourage families, schools, and local organisations to get involved, whether by volunteering, attending events, or trying swimming themselves. This ensures that the benefits of inclusive sport can extend further.

A Legacy of Inclusion

Long may the GYWSO club continue as a cherished community group, where everyone can belong, achieve and take pride in their abilities.
