Kingfisher Amateur Boxing Club Awarded GYSLT Grant

Supporting Great Yarmouth Boxing Since 1964

Kingfisher Amateur Boxing Club has been awarded a grant from Great Yarmouth Sport & Leisure Trust to purchase new competition headguards, supporting the continued development of amateur boxing in Great Yarmouth.

Founded in 1964, the club is the only England Boxing affiliated boxing club in the local area. From its beginnings in a fish house on Exmouth Road to its current home at 32 Riverside Road, Gorleston, Kingfisher has been serving the community for more than 60 years.

Today, with around 180 members, it remains one of the most established amateur boxing clubs in Norfolk

Boxing Classes in Great Yarmouth for All Ages

Kingfisher runs structured boxing classes for:

  • Children aged 6–11

  • Young people aged 12+

  • Senior members

As a community boxing club in Great Yarmouth, it offers boxing fitness and technical training within a disciplined, inclusive environment. Members develop physical fitness alongside confidence, resilience and social skills - key benefits for those seeking boxing classes for kids in Norfolk.

Funding Essential Competition Headguards

TThe GYSLT grant will contribute towards six new competition headguards:

  • 2 medium (blue)

  • 2 medium (red)

  • 1 large (blue)

  • 1 large (red)

Competition-standard headguards cost £110 each and are required for amateur contests, where boxers may be allocated to either red or blue corners.

This refreshed kit will allow the club to continue entering its most promising boxers into regional and national competitions including last year’s team trip to Guernsey, ensuring safety and compliance with amateur boxing regulations.

Removing Financial Barriers to Competition

Graham Plant, trustee of Great Yarmouth Sport & Leisure Trust said:

Kingfisher Amateur Boxing Club has been developing young people in our community for over six decades. By supporting essential competition equipment, we are helping ensure that talented local boxers can compete safely and confidently, regardless of personal financial circumstances. Community clubs like this play a vital role in keeping Great Yarmouth active.”

Many young boxers rely on shared club equipment, and replacing ageing headguards ensures safe participation at competitive level.

Congratulations to everyone at Kingfisher Amateur Boxing Club - a club built on volunteer commitment, local pride and long-standing community service.
