Bread Kitchen: Growing a Healthier Cobholm Community

How Bread Kitchen is helping Cobholm get active and connected

A GYSLT grant is helping Cobholm’s Bread Kitchen C.I.C. replace its storm-damaged polytunnel – supporting a community space that helps local people get active, grow healthy food and connect with others.

Bread Kitchen’s weekly gardening groups welcome up to 25 local residents each session, providing an accessible way for adults to get involved in physical activity while learning, growing and spending time together.

The groups are open all year round and bring together people of different ages, including one participant aged 78!

Growing health and wellbeing

Gardening provides a natural way to build physical activity into everyday life. Planting, tending crops and maintaining the site all involve movement, while the shared nature of the sessions encourages people to work together.

For Bread Kitchen, though, the benefits go beyond being active.

The projects are designed to support local residents who may be vulnerable or experiencing poor mental health, providing a safe environment where they can develop skills, confidence and connections.

Growing food also creates opportunities to talk about healthy eating. The crops produced by the groups are used to encourage participants to explore healthier food choices that can support their health and fitness.

A place to connect

Bread Kitchen provides more than a gardening space. Its all-year-round activities offer a regular hub for friendship and support, helping reduce social isolation and encouraging people to become more involved in their community.

The organisation has also hosted diabetes screening and cancer awareness training, connecting local residents with wider health and wellbeing initiatives.

And the impact can continue beyond Bread Kitchen itself. Participants have progressed into further volunteering and other healthy activities, including gym membership.

The GYSLT grant will help restore the polytunnel after storm damage, allowing these opportunities to continue throughout the year.

Pride in Great Yarmouth COMMUNITY

By helping people grow food, move more, learn new skills and spend time together, Bread Kitchen is helping create a healthier and more connected Cobholm community.
