Winterton Marine Cadets set sail with new buoyancy aids

We’re pleased to support Winterton Marine Cadets with buoyancy aids to enable their cadets and staff to sail on a regular basis.

Based at Caister Academy and Winterton Village Hall, the charity youth organisation provides activities and structure to young people aged 10 to 21 years of age. They currently have 21 members from the local area and, apart from the monthly subs, try to provide as much funding themselves without asking for contributions from parents or guardians.

The charity would like to offer cadets the opportunity for ongoing development of their sailing abilities and skills by partaking in open sailing for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. The charity owns an inflatable power boat, but new buoyancy aids are needed in order to use the boat on the Broads and in the sea.

Winterton Marine Cadets are very passionate about providing all young people, particularly those from low-income families who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to experience sailing activities. In addition, the charity provides sailing certificates which can help young people in later life, such as when making college applications. The sailing activities can really boost young people’s confidence in their own abilities, together with confidence in working as a team when sailing the larger boats. In addition, being out in the fresh air can also help mental and physical wellbeing.

We wish Winterton Marine Cadets continued success and look forward to seeing their progress along the way.

New women’s team at Caister Football Club receives funding for new kit

We’re only too pleased to support Caister Football Club with funding for a new women’s football team kit. With management and players already lined up, the club is establishing a female adult football team and the club want to ensure their team is kitted out ready for next season.

Established over 100 years ago, Caister FC have nine youth teams and three adult teams making them over 300 members strong. The club aims to enable people of all ages, genders, and abilities to participate in grassroots football and offer a facility for the community. The club is so passionate about being involved in the local community, that it helped to provide free meals for vulnerable people at the start of the pandemic. See here for the full story.

In their wish to promote the participation of female players, to increase awareness and to offer more women the opportunity to join a local team, Alan Pearce, Chairman commented “All of us at Caister FC consider that it is crucial to broaden our engagement with the local community. We believe grassroots sport will become ever more important in the future and our ambition is to provide the best environment for the club members. Obtaining this funding from the Great Yarmouth Sport and Leisure Trust will diversify what we can offer and enhance our sustainability. We are very grateful that they share in our vision for the future of the club."

Watch out for the new women’s kit which we’re excited to report will include Great Yarmouth Sport and Leisure Trust branding!

Our borough has two new NORSUF Running Group leaders

IMG_9601.JPG

We are over the moon that the two leaders we funded for NORSUF Running Group have completed their training, and are just awaiting their licence from England Athletics before they set up groups in Caister, Bradwell and Gorleston!

Sam and Russell’s group sessions are for new members who want to walk, jog or run in a supportive group.

Sam started with NORSUF Running Group on Couch to 5k in January 2018 and she is now a competent leader: "The course was very informative and covered groups of all abilities. When I receive my licence I plan to run weekly free running group for beginners in my area.  I think it’s important beginners are encouraged and supported.  There are a large amount of sessions to cater for runners but very few for beginners".

Russell joined in July 2018 has achieved a large amount in a very short time: "I found the course enjoyable, all of the content and more we had covered in the extra 1-2-1 mentoring sessions.  Therefore I was able to attend with a confident open mind.  Now qualified I feel confident to lead my own local sessions and support you in the coaching group. I will get a great sense of achievement from encouraging beginners to run and improve their physical and mental health. My intended group sessions will be in the village of Caister-on-sea where I have already made preparations".

You can find out how to join by visiting the Run Together website.

Trevor Rawson, an inspirational local health coach heads up NORSUF Running Group, amongst many other groups and activities (you can contact him here), said, "NORSUF Running Group are very grateful to Great Yarmouth Sporting and Leisure Trust for funding two Run leaders for our free group.  Sam and Russell with go on from their courses and be volunteer leaders in their communities.  This will provide opportunities for walkers, joggers and runners to join a supportive Running Group that welcomes all abilities slow or quicker.  I am very proud of what Sam and Russell have achieved in such a short space of time. Registration and participation in our group sessions and meet-ups are free.  Many of our members have already gone on to enter local Races, Fun-runs and charity events together.”

Our group will be supporting England Athletics #RunAndRevise and #RunAndTalk campaigns this year.

Caister FC awarded £500 funds

Caister FC Blog post.jpg

Caister Football Club has received an extra boost to its attempts to improve their playing field which is in poor repair as it is not maintained well enough, with a £500 award from Great Yarmouth Sport and Leisure Trust.

The club offers people of all ages and ability to participate in football, with seven youth sides, and three adult sides consisting of 200 players.

This award will maximise Caister FCs fundraising efforts to purchase their own ground maintenance equipment. This will help people of all ages and abilities to participate in football nearer to home (adult sides are currently paying to train elsewhere). It will also help other groups who use the field (cricket club, scouts and the general public), as well as giving new teams access.

We are so pleased that the equipment that Caister Football Club will buy will help keep people active, and we hope that the lead taken by Caister Football Club will inspire other fundraisers in the sports sector to apply for funding.

We are accepting applications now from projects and individuals in the borough of Great Yarmouth, to review and award in February, please download your application form here!
